Which material for which use: PLA Basic, PLA Matt, PLA CF and PETG

Printimir uses four materials for FDM printing. Your choice affects stiffness, heat resistance, finish and price. Here is what each material is made for.

PLA Basic

The standard choice. It is stiff, dimensionally stable, detailed and produces little odour while printing. It works well for models, prototypes, decorative parts and anything kept indoors at room temperature. Its weakness is heat: PLA begins to lose strength early, so a car interior in summer or a location beside a heat source is unsuitable.

PLA Matt

Technically similar to PLA Basic, but with a matte, even finish. Layer lines are less noticeable and the part looks calmer. It suits decorations, housings and visible parts. Its functional properties are not meaningfully different from PLA Basic.

PLA CF

Reinforced with carbon fibres. It is considerably stiffer than standard PLA, warps less and has a matte, slightly rough surface. It is useful for functional brackets, frames and parts that should not flex under load. It is stiffer, not more impact-resistant than PLA, and remains unsuitable for heat.

PETG Basic

Tougher and more heat-resistant than PLA, with good resistance to moisture and many chemicals. It is the right choice for housings, brackets and parts under moderate mechanical load, as well as damp environments. Fine details are a little less sharp than in PLA.

Quick decision

  • Decorations, figures and display models: PLA Basic or PLA Matt
  • Stiff functional parts without heat: PLA CF
  • Loads, moisture and some warmth: PETG
  • Continuous heat, food contact or medical use: none of our materials; ask us first

Frequently asked questions

Only to a limited extent. PETG is the better choice for outdoor use and moisture. Sustained UV exposure changes both materials over time.
