Three kinds of prototype
- Form model: How does the part look, feel in the hand and proportion itself? A coarser layer height is often enough.
- Fit model: Does it fit its surroundings, and are holes and edges positioned correctly? Dimensional accuracy matters, so allow clearance.
- Functional model: Does a hinge hold, a clip engage or a mechanism run? Material and print orientation become important.
Comparing variants
Add different files or configurations to the cart as separate items. You receive them in one order and can compare them side by side. Label variants in the file so they remain easy to distinguish.
Materials for prototypes
PLA is usually sufficient for form and fit tests. Use PETG or PLA CF when a prototype must withstand real loads or warmth. A functional model made from the wrong material can lead to the wrong conclusion.
From iteration to a small batch
Once a variant is settled, you can reorder it as a one-off part or discuss a small batch through the project request. For recurring identical parts, placing one higher-quantity order makes the quantity discount worthwhile.
